Spring 2020

Few times in my 40-year forestry career have I witnessed dynamics in the lumber/log markets as we are now experiencing.  Lumber prices have moved dramatically higher over the last month, but they are on a wild roller coaster ride that can vary widely day to day.  Consequently, log buyers have more money to work with; however, there is great uncertainty in the lumber/plywood market, and with generally ample log yard inventories at the mills, they are reluctant to move prices much higher.  As this is being written most mills are evaluating their price/inventory positions and trying to decide how to proceed.  If higher lumber-plywood prices are sustained, log prices will move upward.
